KTSW News spent last Saturday at the University of Texas’ L.B.J. School of Public Affairs in Austin covering the New Politics Forum, sponsored by the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation. The event was meant to gather students and aspiring young politicians and featured many guest speakers, both from the Republican and Democrat spectrum, who are currently or have been involved in the political field in Texas and nationally. One of the speakers was the Executive Director of Progress Texas, Matt Glazer. Progress Texas is an online organization who’s mission statement is to inform Texans of progressive solutions to issues going on in the state. Glazer says they do this in a variety of ways, many of which emphasize their dynamic online presence. (He won the Austin-American Statesman’s Social Media Award back in 2009). Glazer, who is a New Politics Forum alumn, spoke on a panel called, “We Did It, So Can You! The New Politics Forum Alumni Panel.” He was joined by other alumni including Vincent Harris, a current member of Newt Gingrich’s communications staff. KTSW spoke with Glazer after the panel, and he talked about the importance of having an internet presence as a political campaign. Glazer also gave us his thoughts on some of the biggest online mistakes made by presidential candidates this year.
